Product Groups
Product groups let you apply different shipping methods and rules to different sets of products. For example, “Heavy Items” might have higher shipping rates than “Small Accessories”.
The Default group
Section titled “The Default group”Every store starts with a Default product group that includes all products. If you never create additional groups, every shipping method applies to all your products — which is fine for many stores.
When to use product groups
Section titled “When to use product groups”Use product groups when you need different shipping behavior for different products:
- Heavy vs. light items — different rate tiers based on product type
- Fragile items — restrict shipping methods (no express/overnight)
- Hazardous materials — limit to specific carriers or zones
- Digital products — no shipping needed (free or hidden methods)
- Gift cards — separate from physical products
How groups work
Section titled “How groups work”- Create a group — give it a name like “Heavy Items” or “Fragile”.
- Assign product variants — pick which specific product variants belong to this group. A variant can belong to multiple groups.
- Create methods for the group — each shipping method is tied to one zone and one product group. Create methods specifically for your group.
- Add rules — rules on those methods only affect products in the group.
Blended rates
Section titled “Blended rates”When a cart contains products from multiple groups, blended rates combine the shipping costs. For example, if a customer orders one item from “Heavy Items” ($15 shipping) and one from “Default” ($5 shipping), a blended rate can present this as a single “$20 Combined Shipping” option at checkout.
See Blended Rates for details.
